The High Loft
Sister Maureen McMahon OP, a retired teacher from Sion Hill, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. This centenarian was the founder of The High Loft, a painting group that inspired generations of artists to embrace their talents.
The High Loft was born from Sister Maureen’s love and appreciation of painting. As a teacher herself she brought together other like-minded art teachers who would paint in the evening during school holidays. In 1980 the group began to use a stable hay loft of a small mews in Sion Hill School, situated at 23 Mount Merrion Avenue. The group’s endearing name, The High Loft, was inspired by their use of a ladder to reach the loft.
The group fostered the talents of well-known artists Mary Nolan and Ross Minaghan (RIP) and of course many lifelong friendships were formed.
The High Loft exhibition was officially opened on Friday 29th June by actress and well known personality Rosaleen Linehan. Sr Maureen attended on Sunday 1st July when the exhibition closed following a very successful showing.
